Think Local!

I read an interesting article yesterday about shopping locally, something that's increasingly becoming a passion of mine. There's a new term for people who make an effort to buy and eat foods that are raised or grown locally: it's "locavore." Pretty cool, right? Buy why not stay local with other things we buy as well? According to the article I read, there are several great reasons for buying locally. 1) it reduces the need for shipping, which reduces pollution (did you know that second only to automobiles, the second greatest expenditure of gas is shipping out of season produce to stores?) 2) it supports the local economy. According to Stacy Mitchell, author of Big-Box Swindle and researcher with the Institute or Local Self-Reliance, a study they did found that for every $100 spent in a chain store, $14 went back to the local economy. For a locally owned business, $45 went back into the local economy! Now, I know it's impossible to get everything we consume from local stores (I'm mean, diapers and toilet paper seem to be almost a must-buy from Cost-Co!) But the important point of her article, which I agree with, is to think first about buying locally and use the big chain stores for items you can't find other places.

Unfortunately, when I looked online there were hardly any resources for us here in Indiana, let alone for us specifically here on the Northside, about shopping locally. So, I actually have an idea in the works about creating a website with all kinds of links for local shopping in "Up-town" (Noblesville, Westfield, Fishers & Carmel)! But that will take awhile; so until then, here's a few links that you might find interesting!

The Zoo: Part Two (No more rhymes now, I mean it! Anybody want a peanut?)

I had such a good time at the zoo on Monday night, I just had to come back again for Round 2 the next day! Just kidding - actually I wanted to get some Christmas photography shots in the day time! I ended up having a great time! (Thanks to Michele for getting me into the zoo for free!) I got to see all of the animals that are normally asleep when we come to the zoo in the evenings for Christmas at the Zoo! Take a look at the pics!

Lounging in the sun! "Boy, I'm sleepy!"

"Hey, I said I'M the king of this rock!"

"I feel pretty! Oh so, pretty!"

"Frick, it's cold in here! Does anybody have a fleece?"

These little guys were chirping and whining (yes, otters actually chirp like birds!) for a snack! Very cute!

The new bear cubs! The Indy Zoo acquired them after their mother had to be killed for attacking a jogger in Alaska!

"Me and my buddy!"

These little guys were my ABSOLUTE favorites! I had never seen the Meerkats before, and they are the cutest things ever! I love when they stand all of the way up on their hind legs! I took like a hundred shots of them (literally!) and even went back to visit them twice! Here's a few of my favorite pics!

Some pics of the beautiful Christmas flowers!

Christmas at the Zoo!

Keeping with our annual tradition, we (Sam's family) braved the cold to enjoy the lights at Christmas at the Zoo! We were supposed to go last Friday, but postponed until Monday because of the weather, and we're sure glad we did! The weather was great! Here's some pics from our night out!

Gwynne & Rowan

Inside the White River Gardens, they set up a really neat and elaborate model train set. The kids love searching for everything on the scavenger hunt list!

Sam petting the sharks!

Em petting the sharks! Ok ok, yes I know...I'm not really "petting" the shark per se (as Sam pointed out of course!) But come on...y'all know how I feel about fish! And these are like uber killer fish...with teeth...and a vendetta.

I can always count on Gwynne to give me a pose!

Em giving Mr. Walrus a tickle under the chin!

I love this picture! Rowan and Gwynne watching the dolphins!

Santa Baby! I've been good ALL year!
Now, of course, it's Rowan's turn with Sam! :-)
Getting ready for the train ride around the Plains to see the lights!

"Will someone PLEASE get this hair out of my frickin' eyes?!?"

I got a little worried about this guy when he walked over and put his nose on the barrel...and then didn't move...at all!

Just a few of the MANY Christmas lights!

Rowan wants one last pic with "her" Sam!

Is this present for moi!

Jackson Family Christmas: Part II

Later on in the afternoon on Christmas Day, Sam and I went to Kevin and Alicia's house for a little get-together! Here's some pics of our evening together!

Sam, Elginia, Kevin & Michele

The group had fun playing a new Jenga-like Wii game!

Wow, that's one wicked thow, Michele! I hope no one steps in front of you!

It's all fun and games until someone gets hit in the head with a Wii controller!
Kevin & Mom
Stacy & Gwynne goofin' around!
The girls have fun making ginger bread houses!
Gwynne hard at work!

A tearful Rowan gets a little frustrated when she can't get her house to stand up! Aw, poor kid!
Em's just one of the kids too!

Oops! Rowan yells "It's going down," just as her house collapses!

Michele tries to help a very ornery looking Rowan maintain the structural integrity of her ginger bread house!

All finished!
Hey, wait a minute!

Awww! Sam wants to play with a ginger bread house too!

Sam & Mom

It's an Elginia sandwich! She looks a little scared!
